Congratulations to Will Foster, Osgoode’s first student to receive the David Vaver Medal for Excellence in IP!

Congratulations to Will Foster, Osgoode’s first student to receive the David Vaver Medal for Excellence in IP!

IP Osgoode is pleased to announce the award of the inaugural David Vaver Medal for Excellence in IP to William Foster, Osgoode Class of 2018!

IP Osgoode founded this special medal, presented during Osgoode convocation on June 22, to mark Prof. David Vaver’s induction into the Order of Canada for his leadership in intellectual property as “a scholar and mentor”.

The medal, befitting of Prof. Vaver’s influence on intellectual property law, is an original piece of artwork created by Toronto-based artist, Aries Cheung. IP Osgoode will award the medal yearly to an Osgoode student in the graduating class who merits special recognition for outstanding achievements in the area of intellectual property law. The student’s achievements extend beyond academic excellence, and can include significant contributions to research in intellectual property and related areas or exceptional commitment and enthusiasm through their participation in intellectual property-related extra-curricular activities.

We could not have selected a more deserving student to receive the first David Vaver Medal for Excellence in IP than Will Foster.  During his three years at Osgoode, Will has not only excelled academically but has demonstrated tireless enthusiasm and dedication to enhancing the spirit of IP at Osgoode.  He has volunteered countless hours at IP Osgoode as a Clinic Fellow with the IP Osgoode Innovation Clinic and with our many other initiatives. As a student in Osgoode’s flagship Intellectual Property Law & Technology Intensive Program (IP Intensive), Will was formidable in his placement at SOCAN. Will’s excellent research work with myself and Professor Vaver is also noteworthy and deserving of commendation. Will is also a recipient of the Barry D. Torno Memorial Prize for his research paper in IP on advanced patent litigation. Will is set to work at Gowling WLG after he is called to the Bar this year.

Congratulations to Will and wishing him every success in his future career in IP!
