This year’s Canadian Music Week (March 9-13, 2011) transformed the ritzy, historical Royal York hotel in downtown Toronto into a multi-floor concert fest with large screens, concert lighting, stages and rows of seating in front of stages adorned with sofas and mics. Attending the events were lawyers, law students, music production students, journalists, musicians and music industry executives from Canada, the US and abroad (including Europe, South East Asia and Australia).

Previously on IPilogue, I discussed the U.S. Senate race between Harry Reid and Sharron Angle, who are both embroiled in copyright litigation. Hypothetically, these parties could succeed in raising different copyright defences in Canada.

Senate Majority Leader Reid is being sued by Angle for the republication of her former campaign website under a new URL, “http://www.therealsharronangle.com/,” which she originally removed and replaced with a reformulated, less inflammatory version of her platform. Reid has chosen the defences of fair use and freedom of speech, under political speech and parody.

Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader from Nevada, is struggling in his bid for re-election against Sharron Angle, a Republican endorsed by the Tea Party Express. Alongside the usual political mudslinging, the two are also embroiled in an intellectual property battle.

Angle once had a campaign website featuring hard-line stances on a variety of issues including healthcare reform, energy policy, taxation, national security, and same-sex marriage. She then sought to rebrand herself in order to broaden her appeal, by retooling her website and removing the more inflammatory materials in the process.

Overlooking the Harbourfront in downtown Toronto, I had the chance to work closely in May 2009 with in-house legal counsel at Yahoo! Canada – one of the largest internet companies with a global reach in distributing websites and online services.

Yahoo! Canada keeps the dot-com fantasy alive as in-house lawyers and other staff members are permitted to wear jeans on a Monday (or everyday for that matter). Free food, social events, an open concept kitchen and a well-used foosball table were readily available to keep the work environment casual, efficient, young, modern and just fun – especially to a large office of tech savvy Generation Y individuals, such as yours-truly, who prove that mixing a relaxed atmosphere with serious legal research is entirely possible.
